Feminist Frequency - Tropes vs. Women: #1 The Manic Pixie Dream Girl

I have literally felt a person try to place me into this trope in their life.

I think this whole thing is actually ridiculous.
And yes, it happens. But these movies are bad examples.
I don’t even like 500 Days of Summer that much, but this movie does not have a “manic pixie dream girl” in it.
In most movies, romantic comedies, the female is the one hopelessly in love with the male. The male is the one that completes her life, and “makes her a better person”. Or there’s a male love-interest that finally recognizes this “no-one/invisible girl” and she finally ends up with him and her life is finally happy.
Examples:
He’s Just Not That Into You
27 Dresses
Never Been Kissed
Clueless
Easy A
Pretty in Pink
etc.
These are all great movies, or at least most of them are. But they have the complete reversed roles of the movies gifed above. And a lot of movies follow this structure, because a girl falling helplessly in love with that dream guy who doesn’t notice her is a classic, maybe even sexist, plot that has been used for centuries.
And now finally something like 500 Days of Summer appeals to a wider audience with its quirky vintage themes and the lovable Zooey Deschanel, and people are enjoying a story that’s not about a hopeless girl with big dreams. It’s the other way around and for a feminist like me, it was nice to see the roles reversed.
So excuse me, I like Manic Pixie Dream girls. They kick ass.
The same goes for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. A memorable quote from Clementine, the alleged “dream girl”,
“Too many guys think I’m a concept, or I complete them, or I’m gonna make them alive. But I’m just a fucked-up girl who’s lookin’ for my own peace of mind; don’t assign me yours.”
hmm. Seems like a pretty individual thing to say.
And if that’s what a “manic pixie dream girl” is, then fuck that’s who I am too.

And this is not to say that this kind of role-placing doesn’t happen. Where the female character isn’t even developed and no one even knows who she is and no one cares, she’s just an object in a romantic story. I can’t think of any examples, but I am positive they’re out there. I’ve read them countless times, and they’re in almost every video game. (okay Princess Peach anyone?)
But this post has been bothering me because these women are individuals and they do think for themselves. They’ve just got reversed roles, and I think that’s pretty awesome.
If it’s the other way around and there’s a “cute guy” a particularly reserved girl is interested in (like how it is in most movies/books) then it’s sexist. If it’s reversed and there’s a male that’s interested in a “cute girl” then it’s sexist (manic pixie dream girl).
So maybe we should just stop making movies about white heterosexual couples and then everyone would have new things to argue about.

I feel like this trope may exist however, yes, some of these are bad examples. Women have a history of being written flat annd one-dimensionally. I would at least rather see an attempt by a screenwriter to develop a woman which a man finds inspiration and seeks advice from rather than one who needs to be saved. Also, in any relationship some of the core responsibilities shared between the couple are to be caring, inspiration or emotional help. So yes, in these movies woman may be seen as a an emotional life buoy of sorts but in a fair share of these films presented in the gif the male also is seen to support and care for the women reciprocately (Eternal Sunshine for one).

The following is an actual question given on a University of Arizona chemistry mid-term, and an actual answer turned in by a student.

Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)?

Most of the time I hate chemistry…. but this is TOO good.
